A Career Devoted to City and Community

Education

  • Master of Business Administration, University of Washington Tacoma
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, University of Washington

Work and community

Currently the division manager for the City of Tacoma's Public Works Department Environmental Services Maintenance, John has worked for Tacoma his entire career. "I am proud of the difference I've made in the community here. There are several habitat restoration projects and significant environmental clean-ups that I've played a project manager role on. That has been very rewarding. I've been able to bring technical problem solving skills together with good communication skills."

The UW Tacoma advantage

Although conventional wisdom says school always pales in comparison to real work experience, John found that his education supplemented his years of experience. In fact, he focused on general business management, the very thing he was already doing. "I chose that because I felt like I needed some training on how to run the business that I was technically trained on while working here for 25 years," he said. "I think the MBA is the perfect course of study for a technical person like myself who is now in the position of managing a business. It had the right degree of detail in a wide variety of subjects that I had no previous formal training in: marketing, accounting, finance, etc." As for why he chose UW Tacoma, the die-hard Tacoman said, "Location, location, location!"
