Faculty International Travel Awards

Award Definition and Policy Statement

Travel assistance is available to help tenure-track faculty members travel to prestigious international conferences to present the results of research in an invited paper or to serve as an invited speaker.  Funds may be used for airfare or fares supporting alternative modes of transportation.  The maximum award is $1,000.  Individuals are limited to one award within a two-year period.

A restricted amount of funding is available each fiscal year (July - June) to support faculty international travel within the year.  Funding will be approved on a first-come-first-served basis with adjustments to maintain equity in the process.   Requests may be submitted at any time for any date during any fiscal year.  Once the funds for a specific fiscal year have been fully committed, the request system will be closed for that period and will open again only if cancellations are entered or additional funds are allocated for this purpose.  Departments will be notified if additional funds are made available.

Submitting a Request

Faculty international travel requests must be submitted by authorized departmental personnel using MyGradProgram.  Faculty wishing to request travel funding should contact the unit's financial administrator for instructions and internal policies for the department.  The system will be open for submission of requests until all funds are awarded.  International travel requests require the concurrence of the department chair or director. Submission of the request in MyGradProgram will indicate that the request has the concurrence of the chair or director.

Accessing Awards

The award approval process in MyGradProgram will generate an e-mail message to the faculty member, the department GSFEI contact and the requestor.  All faculty international travel awards will be funded from a Graduate School budget.  Faculty receiving notice of an award should contact Dianne Zimmer via e-mail at dzimmer@u.washington.edu or by phone at (206) 685-2628 for instructions for accessing the award.  This information will also be provided in the e-mail notification.
