Latino/a Scholars Graduate School Fellowship

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, July 31, 2015 at 5:00 PM (PDT)

In 2013, a group of engaged, committed UW faculty, civic and business leaders joined together to establish the Latino/a Scholars Graduate School Fellowship to provide financial assistance to students who have a demonstrated commitment to Latino communities, regardless of documented status.  Graduate students from the health sciences are especially encouraged to apply. 

This fellowship is a one-time award of $1,500.  Funds will be dispersed to awardees during Autumn quarter.  

Eligibility

  • A student must be enrolled full-time in a master's or doctoral program at the University of Washington during the 2015-16 academic year;
  • Their research, work, and/or service must demonstrate their commitment to Latino communities.

Application

The application should be submitted as one PDF document, though separate documents are acceptable but not preferred.

To be considered for this fellowship, ALL of the following materials must be received by the application deadline:

  1. Application Form
  2. Personal Statement
    Statement should be double-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman with 1 inch margins and should not exceed two pages.  It should address:
    • How your personal commitment to Latino communities has taken shape in your service, research, and/or paid employment;
    • How your graduate education will embody your commitment to Latino communities in your personal and/or professional goals; and
    • How this fellowship would impact your ability to complete a graduate degree at the University of Washington.
  3. Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  4. Letter of Recommendation
    A one page letter or recommendation should be directly submitted by the recommender to the Letter of Recommendation Dropbox>. If a recommender is not staff or faculty at the UW and does not have access to Catalyst, they can email the recommendation as an attachment to Cynthia Morales.  The recommendation should be submitted with the student's first and last name in the title.
    To the best of her/his ability, the recommender should address the following:
    • The applicant's academic strengths and academic progress;
    • The applicant's engagement with Latino communities and issues; and
    • Obstacles the applicant may have encountered in her/his academic or personal journey and how she/he has responded to them.

Applications and recommendations should be submitted directly to the LSGSF Catalyst Dropbox.
